A smaller galaxy plummeted through the centre of the Cartwheel galaxy some 100 million years ago, causing ripples of short star creation. The first ripple emerges in this image as an ultraviolet-bright blue outer ring that is so powerful that it may be one of the most powerful UV-emitting galaxies in the local cosmos.
Although astronomers have not determined which galaxy collided with the Cartwheel, two of three possible galaxies can be seen in this view, one as a neon blob and the other as a green spiral, at the bottom left of the ring.
Previously, astronomers thought the ring represented the galaxy’s furthest edge, but new GALEX scans reveal a faint disc, not seen in this image, that extends to twice the diameter of the ring.
